Welcome to the Dillon Public Library Seed Library Page.
The time to plant for Dillon is here.
Beaverhead County residents with active library cards may obtain seeds from our Seed Library. Visit the library and browse the seed catalog binders. There is one binder for vegetables and one for flowers. We provide approximately 300 varieties of seeds. This is your opportunity to try different vegetables and flowers in your garden.
Our focus is on quality heirloom and organic seeds. Our goal is to promote the love of gardening as well as provide educational opportunities and resources for our community related to gardening. Stop by our library to checkout our section of books on gardening.
Once you find the seeds you want to grow, pull them from the old card catalog drawers. They are filed numerically. Fill out a seed checkout sheet and take that sheet to the circulation desk. This helps the library keep an inventory of which seeds are available and which need to be reordered.
Dillon Garden Club sponsors our seed library and donates the majority of the seeds in our library. We also accept donations of heirloom seeds from local gardeners. Help keep our seed supply plentiful by collecting your seeds in the fall and returning a portion of your seeds to the library.
In the fall, please return a Seed Notes evaluation form of which seeds grow and produce in Dillon and which do not. This helps us know what to order for the next year. Also, let us know any seeds you would like us to make available in our seed library.
Why do we focus on heirloom seeds? First heirloom seeds are known to produce better taste and flavor. Second, they are generally more nutritious. By growing heirloom seeds, you have a part in preserving the genetic diversity of plants. Heirloom seeds pass on the characteristics and traits of the parent plant to the next season’s plants – from generation to generation.
We will continue to provide seeds and expand on our education opportunities and resources. Please contact the library with a garden topic you would like to learn or teach.
